Johnny Mathis

John Royce Mathis nasceu em 30 de setembro de 1935, em Gilmor, Texas, filho de Clen e Mildred Mathis. Ainda criança, sua família decidiu mudar-se para San Francisco, e foi lá que aprendeu a gostar de música com seu pai, que comprou um velho piano por US$ 25,00 e ensinou-lhe a primeira canção, “My Blue Heaven”. Isso ocorria quando Johnny tinha 8 anos, sendo o único filho de Clen a se interessar por música. Aprendeu música de canto na escola, cantou em coral de igreja, eventos comunitários, para visitas em sua casa e também em pequenos shows em San Francisco. Johnny tinha 13 anos quando Clen o levou para conhecer Connie Cox, uma professora de canto com quem ele estudou por seis anos, aprendendo escalas vocais e exercitando produção vocal, clássicos e habilidade para ópera.
Um amigo que tinha um sexteto levou-o para cantar em uma boate chamada Black Hawk. Ilelen Hawk, dono da boate, ouviu-o e tornou-se seu empresário, e convenceu George Avakiow, gerente da ala Jess da Columbia, a ir vê-lo.
Então, George mandou um telegrama para sua gravadora dizendo que encontrou um “garoto fenomenal de 19 anos” que podia ficar famoso. A Columbia solicitou a Johnny que fosse para Nova York, a fim de começar os arranjos do seu primeiro disco. Isto ocorreu em 1956. Johnny Mathis, “um raro showman da música popular”, com interpretações inusitadas como “Babalu”, participou de musicais e filmes de Hollywood. Seus grandes sucessos são: Fly Me to the Moon (in Other Words), When Sunny Gets Blue, It’s Not for Me to Say, Wonderful! Wonderful!, Chances are, Wild is the Wind, A Certain Smile, Misty, Maria, A Time for Us, Smile, When a Child is Born, Too Much, Too Little, Too Late.
Em 1957, ele se apresentou no Ed Sullivan Show e tornou-se uma celebridade.
