Quando se fala em Steppenwolf é preciso ter em mente a música “Born to Be Wild”, sucesso absoluto em 1968, que projetou o grupo. A canção se tornou uma espécie de hino da rebeldia da década de 60. O nome da banda foi depois mudado para John Kay and Steppenwolf devido à grande influência do vocalista em toda a trajetória do grupo formado no sul da Califórnia, que teve seu nome inspirado em um dos romances do escritor Herman Hesse.
Kay nasceu na Alemanha, mas foi criado em Toronto, no Canadá. Desde a adolescência, identificava-se com a música e começou a trabalhar em uma rádio amadora, onde podia até tocar seu ritmo preferido, o rock. Com um violão na mão, Kay tocava blues acústico nos bares de Toronto. Graças a essas pequenas apresentações, Kay foi convidado, em 1965, a fazer parte da banda de blues, The Sparrow. Eles tocaram em Nova York e São Francisco, nos Estados Unidos, e após dois anos de tentativa de lançar um disco, a banda terminou.
Kay decidiu ir para Los Angeles, onde o produtor Gabriel Mekler, do selo ABC-Dunhill o incentivou a criar a sua própria banda e prometeu lançar um trabalho pela gravadora. O momento não podia ser melhor, Kay juntou alguns músicos que ele havia conhecido enquanto estava no The Sparrow e montou o Steppenwolf. A banda era formada pelos americanos Michael Monarch (guitarra), Goldy McJohn (teclado) e os canadenses Rushton Moreve (baixo) e Jerry Edmonton (bateria). Nesta época, o grupo adotou Los Angeles como cidade e lançou o primeiro e inesquecível single “Born to Be Wild”.
