Em 1983, Slash formou a banda Road Crew (nome da música Motörhead ".Ele colocou um anúncio no jornal para um baixista,e recebeu uma resposta de Duff McKagan.Quando o Road Crew dissolvida, Slash juntou a uma banda local conhecido como Hollywood Rose , liderada por Axl Rose,Slash, que já conhecia quando Axl e sua colega de banda Izzy Stradlin estava procurando membros da banda nova. Após sua experiência em Hollywood Rose, Slash brevemente tocava em uma banda chamada Black Sheep.Em junho de 1985, Slash e Steven Adler foram convidados a participar com Axl Rose,Duff McKagan e Izzy Stradlin como a banda Guns 'N Roses
