Em 1903, o compositor com formação em música clássica W. C. Handy (William Christopher Handy) encontrou na estação de trem de Tutwiler, no Estado de Mississipi, um negro tocando em sua guitarra, com a ajuda de uma navalha, a música mais estranha que ele já tinha ouvido. Mais tarde, em Memphis, gravou ‘Yellow Dog Blues’, semelhante a aquela estranha música que ouvira e que ficou para sempre em seus ouvidos, hoje todos o apontam como o ‘pai do blues’. Handy não inventou nada, mas foi o primeiro a compor e publicar a música que hoje conhecemos como blues, e os prêmios do gênero chamam-se ‘W.C. Handy Awards’. Um século depois daquele mágico encontro em uma solitária plataforma de uma estação de trem, o Congresso dos Estados Unidos classificando o blues como um tesouro nacional, oficialmente declarou o ano de 2003 como o ‘Ano do Blues’.

Além das inúmeras festividades, Martin Scorsese aproveitou para lançar o seu projeto mais ambicioso: sete filmes documentários para contar a história do blues, produzidos por ele e cada um deles dirigido por um diretor, todos, como Scorsese, fãs incondicionais do blues.

Além de lançar um disco com a trilha sonora de cada filme, Scorsese lançou uma caixa com 5 discos e um livreto contando a história do blues de forma cronológica. As suas raízes africanas; as músicas cantadas nas plantações de algodão, em que o líder cantava um verso e os demais repetiam com o ritmo marcado por suas enxadas; gravações da década de 20; as primeiras cantoras; os primeiros compositores; guitarristas do Delta; o blues de Chicago; pianistas; jazzistas tocando blues; poetas; o blues acústico; o elétrico. Não satisfeito, Scorsese lançou ainda uma série de discos dos maiores artistas da história do blues. Elegeu 12 que resumiriam um pouco da história deste estilo: Robert Johnson, Son House, Muddy Waters, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Keb' Mo', The Allman Brothers, B.B. King, J.B. Lenoir, Taj Mahal e Bessie Smith. Como o projeto foi criado baseado no gosto pessoal de Scorsese, claro que houve ausências significativas.
