Deep Musik Blues: Billie Holiday

Billie Holiday, nascida Eleanor Fagan Gough em Baltimore, Maryland, Estados Unidos, em 1915, é reconhecida como a maior intérprete que o jazz já produziu. Filha ilegítima do guitarrista de jazz Clarence Holiday, e rejeitada por ele, passou uma infância de grande pobreza. Era pouco mais que uma adolescente, mas já cantava, fumava maconha trazidos por marinheiros e se prostituía para viver. Após mudar-se com sua mãe para New York City, começou a cantar em pequenos clubes do Harlem e gravou algumas canções com Benny Goodman e Duke Ellington. O reconhecimento público veio através de uma série de gravações que fez com o pianista Teddy Wilson e sua banda de 1935 a 1939. Desde então, contou com o acompanhamento das melhores bandas e músicos da época, entre eles, o saxofonista Lester Young que se tornou grande amigo de quase toda a sua vida e que lhe deu o apelido de Lady Day.

‘Você não se importa de subir no palco e ir tocando piano até Lady Day subir, se importa? Tenho de ir até lá embaixo, dar uns chutes no estômago dela, amassá-la um pouco e enchê-la de socos para ela cantar bem.’ Quem falava assim de Billie Holiday era seu amante John Levy. Ela sofreu nas suas mãos e nas de quase todos os outros. A tragédia pessoal e as drogas marcaram sua vida. Mas todo o lixo que ela viveu era transfomado pelo seu canto. Surras, prisões, droga pesada, mais o drama de uma cantora negra naquele tempo, como muitas vezes nos hotéis onde se hospedava, no auge da carreira, ser convidada a subir pelo elevador de serviço para que não se misturasse com os brancos. Tudo isso foi transformado em interpretações históricas. Quando se ouve Billie cantar, sente-se que ela está contando sua história, tragédias como em 'Strange Fruit', sobre um assassinato no Sul, e 'God Bless The Child', uma de suas próprias composições e que versava sobre a pobreza.

Sua última apresentação foi em 1959, durante um concerto beneficente em New York, onde chegou a ser presa por porte de drogas alguns dias depois. Billie faleceu neste mesmo ano, recebeu o título de 'Lady Sings The Blues', em 1973. Era linda, louca, sexy e livre. É a minha deusa.

Poucas parcerias deram à história da música tantos momentos de glória absoluta como Billie Holiday e Lester Young. Foi uma grande e muito especial amizade, dizem até, um grande amor de Lester por Lady Day.
