British Rock N Roll

Considerado, por muitos, como inferior ao da versão norte-americana, o rock britânico no entanto, foi um fator chave para o desenvolvimento posterior que em 1964, liderada pelos Beatles, levou à ‘British Invasion’, e que teve um impacto considerável em todo o mundo. As tentativas iniciais de imitar o rock’n’roll norte-americano aconteceram na Grã-Bretanha em meados dos anos 50, mas os termos ‘rock music’ e ‘rock’ geralmente se referiam à música derivada do ‘blues-rock’ e outros gêneros que surgiram durante a década de 60. O termo é frequentemente usado em combinação com outros termos para descrever uma variedade de sub-gêneros. E tendeu a ser mais orientado para o mercado de discos, enfatizando o virtuosismo e o desempenho dos artistas. Embora muito diverso o rock britânico já produziu muitos dos mais importantes grupos e artistas e iniciou ou desenvolveu significativamente muitos dos mais influentes sub-gêneros, incluindo beat music, progressive rock, heavy metal, punk, post punk, new romanticism e indie rock

Na década de 50 a Grã-Bretanha tinha sido exposta à cultura norte-americana através das tropas de soldados que ali estavam e embora não desfrutassem da mesma prosperidade econômica, além da língua em comum tinham semelhantes evoluções sociais e os jovens estavam acostumados aos estilos musicais norte-americanos em especial ao jazz tradicional e alguns precursores do rock’n’roll como o boogie-woogie e o blues. A partir daí surgiu em 1955 a mania ‘skiffle’, uma mistura de jazz, blues, folk e country e tocada com instrumentos pouco convencionais, geralmente caseiros ou usando instrumentos improvisados. Originário dos Estados Unidos na primeira metade do século XX tornou-se popular no Reino Unido em 1950, onde foi associada principalmente à Lonnie Donegan cuja versão do blues folk ‘Rock Island Line’ alcançou as paradas mundiais. Ao mesmo tempo, a juventude britânica estava começando a descobrir o rock’n’roll. Para muitos, foi através do filme ‘Blackboard Jungle’ de 1955, o primeiro a usar o rock’n’roll na trilha sonora e que deu o pontapé inicial para as vendas de ‘Rock Around the Clock’ de Bill Haley & His Comets, que ajudou a desencadear o ‘boom’ do rock

‘British Rock’n’Roll’ oferece esta excelente visão da era pré-Beatles do rock britânico, iluminando esse tempo a partir de meados dos anos 50. Além da homenagem aos precursores Wee Willie Harris e Tommy Steele, existem algumas raridades que não foram hits na época, mas agora são de importância histórica: Tom Jones com ‘Chills and Fever’, o pré-Who ‘The High Numbers’ em ‘I'm The Face’ e a versão de Rod Stewart para ‘Good Morning Little Schoolgirl’, que tem sido regravada inúmeras vezes ao longo das décadas. Assim como os clássicos do autêntico rock britânico ‘Shakin' All Over’ por ‘Johnny Kidd and the Pirates’ e Vince Taylor com ‘Brand New Cadillac’. Além de alguns exemplares inferiores, tem a versão estranha e intrigante de Marion Ryan para ‘Why Do Fools Fall In Love’, um original norte-americano. E ‘Lord Rockingham's XI’, um grupo de jazzistas que se aventurou na nova moda, o rock’n’roll. A grande omissão é em relação a Cliff Richard, mas no geral o álbum é uma introdução muito boa para os não especialistas
